Winter weather driving tips

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Many Western Mass. residents woke up to a fresh coating of snow Sunday morning.

Only about an inch of snow or less fell but it was enough to cause some headaches on the road.

Main roads were treated with sand and salt, but smaller residential streets and parking lots were slippery, especially when you had to brake suddenly or make a turn.

For road conditions you can dial 511 for information from the Mass Dept. of Transportation.

And 22News is working for you with winter driving safety tips:

  • If your car is parked in a driveway or a parking lot, it will be covered with snow. Clear all snow from all windows and lights.
  • Leave plenty of room for stopping.
  • Remember trucks are heavier than cars. They take longer to come to a complete stop so avoid cutting in front of them quickly.
  • Don’t use cruise control.
  • And most importantly - slow down.

The posted speed limits are for dry pavement.

By Sunday afternoon most of the new snow had melted away as temperatures rose into the upper 30s.
