SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - After decades of planning and discussions, a project to rehabilitate Springfield's Union Station is finally underway, with an extra financial boost from the state.

The historic station will be turned into a transportation hub for local and regional buses, Amtrak, commuter, and high-speed rail.

Governor Deval Patrick announced Tuesday the state will contribute $4 million toward the revitalization project.

Congressman Richard Neal (D-Springfield) says that the project has struggled to gain support over the years, but funding has never been an issue.

"I think there were a series of starts and stops, one or two that were beyond our control. With some satisfaction, I can say there were rejectionists,” Neal said.

The project’s first phase, which began Tuesday, will involve the rehabilitation of the terminal building on Frank B. Murray Street, and the destruction of the adjacent baggage building.

The second phase of the project will emphasize adding retail and restaurants to the terminal.
