AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) - Agawam police are warning residents about so-called “soda bottle bombs” being placed in mailboxes around town.

Detective Lieutenant Richard Light of the Agawam Police Department sent out an e-mail alert to town residents notifying them about the pressure-activated explosive devices, which are made using plastic soda bottles and caustic chemicals.

People who come in contact with the explosives can get chemical burns and other injuries.

Light told 22News that earlier in the week, two small soda bottles exploded in mailboxes, several other similar explosives were found in other mailboxes in town. Fortunately, no one las been injured.

Light says that you find such an explosive, do not touch it, but call 9-1-1 immediately.

If you have information that could help police in their investigation, call the department at (413) 786-4767.

Soda bottle bombs have become a concern in other nearby towns in recent years, as similar incidents have been reported in the past in Wilbraham and Springfield.
