SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A fire on Springfield's Worthington Street early Sunday morning  left a mom and her kids without a place to live.

That occurred just a few blocks away from the Worthington Street gas explosion that affected so many lives one week ago.

One neighbor referring to the proximity and time frame said it's tragedy after tragedy on Worthington Street, a real hard luck street.

Victims who were evacuated from their apartment Sunday shivered in the cold at 2 o'clock in the morning outside of 931 Worthington Street.

The Pioneer Valley Red Cross Disaster Relief volunteers would later provide the woman and her three children, including an infant with food, clothing and a temporary place to live

Hours later neighbors told 22News they're saddened by what happened.

“It's pretty tough because it's Christmas time and, and being homeless like that… I mean especially if there are kids involved. It's terrible. I wouldn't wish that on nobody,” said. neighbor Josselyn Boban.

Commenting on the apparent cause of the fire Dennis Leger, the aide to fire commissioner, Joseph Conant told 22News, someone had fallen asleep while cooking up some food in the kitchen.
