EASTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - Twenty workers lost their jobs at Berry Plastics in Easthampton this week, and the company told employees that they may have to shorten the work week by one day over the winter months.
Berry Plastics Communications director Eva Schmitz told 22News, "On January 15 and 16, 2013, Berry Plastics Corporation issued layoff notification to approximately 20 employees at its Easthampton, Massachusetts facility. The layoff is effective immediately."
Schmitz also said the remaining 315 workers could have their hours shortened.
The Company informed its employees that if demand remains at current levels, it anticipates shortening the work week by one day during the following weeks: January 20, January 27, February 10, February 17, March 10, March 17, Schmitz said.
Schmitz blamed economic conditions for the workforce reductions, and maintained that the future of the Easthampton plant is strong.
Berry Plastics laid off 26 workers last August.
Schmitz said those let go included hourly and salaried workers.
