AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) - Alcohol companies continue to push the limits to come up with new and trendy products. The latest one that's creating a buzz is alcohol-infused whipped cream. Some people are calling it the new "Four Loko."
According to the Boston Herald, the Massachusetts Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission is keeping an eye on it. They're worried it could easily be abused by college students or even under-aged teens. But, "CREAM", as it's called, is different from "Four Loko" in price and alcohol content. "Four Loko" is 12% alcohol, while "CREAM" is 15% alcohol; more than three times the alcohol in beer. While "Four Loko" was cheap, "CREAM" isn't. It's more than $12 per bottle. But, that's not stopping some people from buying it.
At Liquors 44 in Hadley, employee Emily Brown told 22News that she's "selling it mostly to students impulsively, selling five to ten a week. People will come back and ask for it." She said that she expects it to get more popular during the holidays as a topping for desserts or drinks. Brown said students are buying it to eat it and get drunk, however.
22News visited UMass Amherst to find out if it's catching on there. Most students we talked to had not even heard of it, but those who had were happy to tell us about it. Scott Giamocei, a senior, said "I heard about it like a month ago. A girl at a tailgate offered me some. It tasted pretty disgusting."
Most students said that they don't think this fad will catch on. They say it's simply too expensive and difficult to eat a lot of. Also, there is no nutritional information listed on the bottle, so it is difficult to know how many calories is in this alcoholic whipped cream. Still, if it's anything like normal whipped cream, it could have a lot of calories and fat in it.
