NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - While candy may be a kid’s dream for Halloween, it’s the dentist's nightmare.
Dentists are taking a stand against sweets. This Halloween, different dentists are offering incentives for kids to ditch the sweet stuff. Some dentists are trading trick-or-treaters for their candy. For every pound of candy you bring to the office, they will give you a dollar.
Orthodontists like those at Rigali & Walder Orthodontics in Northampton are trading the sticky candy for ice cream. Dr. Joan Walder says patients with braces shouldn't be eating hard candy because it can pull braces out.
"We came up with it noticing that braces get knocked off. We have a lot more emergencies after Halloween. Halloween, Christmas, lots of other times, but Halloween in particular,” Walder said.
“I think it would be interesting for kids that like ice cream and if my son wanted to do I would let him," Lisa LaBombard of Southampton said.
If you want to keep your sweet tooth in check, you should call your dentist and see if they are offering the "trade-in" program for the days after Halloween.
