South Hadley superintendent to retire

Gus Sayer faced criticism after Prince suicide

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) - Some South Hadley residents demanded that Superintendent Gus Sayer resign in May, and now Sayer may be retiring.

He is not seeking a new contract, and will retire at some point in the coming months, according to the Boston Globe.

While Sayer’s contract is up at the end of the coming school year, he could retire before then. He has yet to decide on a date.

Sayer was criticized after 15 year-old Phoebe Prince took her own life after enduring months of bullying at South Hadley High School. Former Northwest District Attorney Elizabeth Scheibel alleged that school officials were aware of the harassment and let it continue.

Former South Hadley High School Principal Dan Smith also left amid this controversy. Smith denied that the Phoebe Prince case influenced his decision to retire.

Sayer has only said that he is ready to move on.
