PELHAM, Mass. (WWLP) - When the clock struck midnight and a new year begun, it was a time for rejoicing; but for 32-year-old Michael Atwell from the Franklin County town of Orange, it meant the end of his life.

Massachusetts State Trooper Tim Murphy told 22News, that around Midnight, the driver from Orange was thrown out of his car during an accident on Route 202 in Pelham.

An ambulance rushed him to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, but not soon enough to save his life.

Twenty-three-year-old Jessica Richards of Brookfield was a passenger in the car.

Her injuries are very serious, according to trooper Murphy.

Murphy confirmed that the icy road and heavy fog may possibly have helped cause the fatal accident.
