Cell phone users willing to give up more than time

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - iPhone fans swarmed Apple stores across the country today in search of the iPhone 5.

With the release of Apple’s newest gadget, 22News wanted to know how attached users were to their phones.  It didn't take long for us to find cell phone users with devices clutched in their hands, or five inches away from their face.

But what they'd be willing to give up for their phone, may surprise you.

“I think they are nice to have but I think that kids spend way too much time on them,” said Martha McGlinn of Maine.

And a Telenav survey further proved just how much people love their smart phones and how time isn't the only thing users are willing to give up. The survey found close to a quarter of respondents would give up their toothbrush, or even seeing their significant other for a week, before giving up their smart phone. We took to the streets of Northampton and put the question to the test.

Ksusha Ryabin is a student at UMass Amherst, who didn’t hesitate when asked, “would you give up your toothbrush for a week instead of having your mobile phone? Probably, I'd use my finger to brush my teeth,” said Ryabin on Friday.

Karla Geoffroy is a mom of three from Westfield, when asked the same question, she replied “Definitely, not, no.” Geoffroy would also not give up seeing her husband.

Jackie Hodgson of Boston told 22News she must always answer a text or call as soon as she receives it, and when sleeping you can find her phone “on my night stand.”

The survey also found the type of cell phone you own can impact behavior and reflect on the choices you make.  More than three quarters of iPhone users thought other iPhone users would make the best romantic partners.
