AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) - Amherst Police are reminding college students to protect their valuables during the upcoming winter break.

Lt. Ronald Young told 22News burglaries traditionally rise considerably during this time period of time.

He says thieves will commonly target areas with high student populations, knowing that students often leave their belongings behind.

Amherst Police have adopted what they're calling the " Stop Initiative" to help spread awareness.

  • Secure all doors and windows.
  • Take your valuables with you.
  • Keep what you can't take out of sight.
  • And patrol. Report any suspicious activity.

Lt. Young says If it doesn't look right, it probably isn't.
