AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) - If you're looking to cool off this weekend in Amherst, one option you won't have is the War Memorial Pool.
On Friday, temperatures in Amherst reached 80 degrees by noontime; just as the LSSE baseball & little league camp was getting ready to practice. The little leaguers would usually have the choice of cooling off at the War Memorial Pool, located just steps away from the field; but on Friday, they had to settle for something else.
“I'm going home and then my sister is going to take me to Mill River,” said Ryan Leonard of Amherst.
“I know that pool is under work so I think a lot people just think that's the alternative cause it's also really close to here,” said Drey Upsherobear of Montague.
The town received a grant of more than $200,000 to renovate the aging pool; renovations that were supposed to be completed last week. Town manager John Musante told 22News the weather led to the delay as recent rain kept the liner from drying but despite the setback many are still looking forward to the opening.
For now, swim programs will be held at the middle school. Amherst hopes to have the pool open by July 4th.
