AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) - The Amherst Survival Center hosted a Thanksgiving dinner one day early.
They say it's one of the biggest turnouts they've ever had.
By 2 on Wednesday afternoon, the Amherst Survival Center had served food to more than 200 people at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. Organizers wouldn't allow 22News cameras inside saying many of those they serve don't want to be identified.
But the parking lot was full and the line was out the door. Organizers credit the turnout to their recent capital campaign that raised funds for the new center, which is slated to open December 3rd.
“People from all walks of life come to this event,” said Tracey Levy, Program Director for the Amherst Survival Center. “It's really about celebrating our community those are two reasons why we have more people today than we have ever seen before.”
Organizers say 50 volunteers helped serve meals. They'll also be handing out Thanksgiving boxes to 450 families.
