SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) - Big Y is closing one of its two supermarkets in South Hadley, the Springfield-based grocery store chain announced Wednesday.

According to a news release sent to 22News by Big Y Foods, they are closing their location on Newton Street by February 9. The company says that the decision comes due to the expiration of the lease on the store, as well as an analysis by the company.

The other Big Y store in town, located about a mile away at 44 Willimansett Street (Route 33), will remain open. It is unclear just how many employees will be laid off, but Big Y says that at least 50 employees of the Newton Street store may be given jobs at the Willimansett Street store, and they will work to also help employees find work at other nearby Big Y stores.

While the complete store transition isn’t expected to be complete until next month, Big Y plans to close the pharmacy at the Newton Street store by January 19, so all prescriptions can be transferred to the Willimansett Street store.

The Newton Street store has been a Big Y location since 2003. Prior to that, the store had been an A&P Super FoodMart.
