Student health services worry about flu on campus

AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) - Tuesday was the first day back for many college students here in western Massachusetts and schools are trying to prevent further flu outbreaks as students return to campus.

Crowded classrooms, gyms, dorm rooms: All those shared spaces can be a breeding ground for germs.

With the recent flu outbreak, many UMass students returning to campus are taking extra precautions to stay healthy.

In fact, University of Massachusetts Amherst Health Services sent out an e-mail message to all students on Monday... urging everyone to get flu shots before coming back to campus.

They also said students should stay home if they are already suffering from the flu.

Many students told 22News as they get ready for the new semester, they are making sure they carry hand sanitizers with them and most importantly, they’re washing their hands often.

“I think everyone is concerned especially when you are around each other all day. Everyone tries to keep all their stuff clean, but you're always sharing something, you know. So it's good to be extra cautious,” said Aaron Araujo a junior at UMass Amherst.

49 states are still reporting widespread flu activities.

UMass is offering walk-in flu vaccinations all week this week. Their Health Services will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
