NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - It is described as one of the most spectacular flowers in the world, and it blooms only once every few years, but the “Titan Arum,” which is now in full bloom at Smith College , is perhaps best known for its odor of rotting flesh.
The flower, which is native to Indonesia, will be on display all day Monday at the Botanic Garden of Smith College. If you are interested in seeing it, you may want to get there as soon as possible, because while it only blooms every three to five years, the massive red and yellow flower is usually only visible for about a day.
Its trademark stench, which has earned the Titan Arum the nickname "corpse flower," is needed for the pollination process, as insects are attracted to the smell.
The Titan Arum is located at the Palm House at Smith College, near the doorway leading to the rock garden. It will be open for viewing until 8:00 P.M.
