NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - Every year, Massachusetts drivers die in wrong way highway accidents, and here in the western part of the state, some Interstate 91 entrance ramps can be particularly dangerous; especially at night.
Pioneer Valley drivers told 22News that the Route 5 entrance ramp to Interstate 91 South in Northampton is too close to the off-ramp. They say it can be a challenge to drivers unfamiliar with the area.
Even veteran local drivers say they still don't feel completely comfortable getting on the highway there.
“I think there are some areas which should be better marked. Maybe adjusted in a way, someone can't make the bad mistake of going up the wrong ramp,” said John Callahan of West Springfield.
Thomas Johnson of Springfield told 22News that he can understands how wrong-way crashes can happen.
“I believe, especially at night and if they're not paying attention to signs, especially the one in the middle that's far off, that should be a little bit closer,” he said.
Next Monday the Massachusetts Department of Transporation will examine the proximity of the I-91 on and off ramps across from the Holyoke Soldiers Home.
That part of Cherry Street has been the subject of numerous complains.
MassDOT reportedly considers this section of Cherry Street to be among the most dangerous in Massachusetts.
