EASTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - The old landfill on Oliver Street in Easthampton is getting a makeover. Borrego Solar Systems is building a solar field there.
They have put up just under 10,000 solar panels, which will create about 2.3 megawatts of power. That is enough to power 500 to 600 homes in Easthampton. All of the power will go right into the grid.
There was some controversy about the placement of this solar field, so 22News asked Bill Perry, the site superintendent on this project, why he thinks this is a great idea. “It's land that can't be used for anything because of the way it's capped. The power that's being used is not burning fossil fuels to create energy for the town,” Perry said.
The solar field will be up and running as early as February.
