NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - The most common eating disorder often goes untreated and even undiagnosed, though it effects one in every five young women.
When people think about eating disorders they often think of anorexia and bulimia. But surprisingly, there is another type of disorder that is even more common: binge-eating. That is why the Walden Behavioral Care held a seminar Thursday about the increasing issue.
Approximately one person in 50 is afflicted with a binge eating disorder. Binge-eating is described as eating large amounts of food, often by yourself, often driven by some type of emotional feeling which results in the person feeling very badly about themselves. This is one of the major drivers of the public health epidemic in the U.S., which is obesity.
“It is underrecognized how important these things are, and how many people actually suffer from all of the eating disorders, including this one,” said Stuart Koman, CEO of Walden Behavioral Care.
Thursday’s seminar was held to raise awareness of this issue and tell people there is treatment.
“These people are influenced by cultural influences, and largely feel badly about themselves and don't necessarily receive treatment,” said Jennifer Smith, director of outpatient programs.
These groups provide treatment in the area for those suffering with these problems. For information about offerings, you can visit their website at waldenbehavioralcare.com
