Eating fast food regularly leads to health issues

Poorer demographics the biggest consumers

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - It's easy to get and affordable. Fast food looks and sounds good but consuming it regularly can lead to a number of health problems.

A new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention survey says that on an average day American adults get an estimated 11% of their daily calories from fast foods. Young black adults eat it the most.

The survey says that 21% of the calories consumed by 20 to 39 year-olds come from Wendy's, Taco Bell and KFC.  But some nutritionists are not convinced, and say the numbers may be larger as many people could not be honest about what they really eat.

“I'm a victim you know, I'm a diabetic, and sometimes I stop to eat fast food because I'm always on the run,” said Katherine Spence of Amherst. “And I do myself say I don't eat that much, you know, just to make it look good.”

Income played a large part in the trend. The poorest demographics reported eating more fast foods.
