Fill-a-bus to help victims of Hurricane Sandy

HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) - Fill-a-bus or bust! It's part of the latest round of Hurricane Sandy relief efforts taking place in Hampshire County.

UMass transit workers began collecting items for Sandy victims on campus Thursday. On Friday, they parked one of their public transit buses outside the Stop & Shop on Route 9 in Hadley, and say they are confident they will fill the bus with donations.

Shoppers were handed a "hot list" of needed items before walking into the supermarket.

“Most people seem really excited and really receptive, and they come out here with a huge bag of paper towels and just say ‘where do I put it?” transit worker Jordan Tedoldi said.

Anne Carrano of Amherst knows people who are still suffering from Sandy’s effects.

“It's a huge problem. Some of my cousins in Long Island don't have power still, in fact they told them they may not even get it until Thanksgiving,” she said.

The bus will be making a stop Saturday at the Whole Foods Market in Hadley from 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. They will be collecting items until Sunday, and will drive them down to New York on Veterans Day.
