AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) - Bargain hunters took over the Amherst Town Green Friday afternoon.
All the buying was for a good cause, though: it’s the annual Recycled Furniture Sale to benefit the Amherst Survival Center . Organizers say that the money raised will help provide meals and health care for area residents in need.
Several area college sports teams are helping sell, move and arrange furniture during the drive. Wrenford Thaffe, the captain of the Amherst College track and field team told 22News that donating their time has become an annual tradition.
“It's really a bonding experience, because I know we do other things as a team: we run and everything. Just to come here and help out with the Survival Center is just something that brings the team together,” Thaffe said.
Student Jocelyn Morgan told 22News that she prefers to shop this way.
“I'm so much more willing to spend my money here than I am to go to, say, a department store and pay three times more to get something new. I'd much rather help the community,” Morgan said.
The furniture sale on the green ends Saturday afternoon at 1:00 P.M.
