NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - Dozens of businesses, schools and universities across the state are marking this day, Food Day, by revamping how they produce and consume food.
Hampshire College celebrated Food Day by hosting a Food and Farm for the Future Event. Local farmers and food producers came together as the college tries to transition into preparing, producing and managing food consumption on campus.
100 acres of the college is dedicated to farming and pasture. It helps the college provide fresh produce to more than 200 families and groups in the local community.
It also helped Jake Hawkesworth, a Hampshire College senior, open up his own business, a food truck. “For this event we are doing as much as we can from the Hampshire farm, and throughout we have been trying to use local supply when we can.”
According to Nancy Hanson of the Community Supported Agriculture, CSA , “We have a farm, we have a community around us that's a great community of farmers, and we really want to change the way we live on the planet and try to do it in a way that will have a lesser impact of what we are doing currently.”
Recently, the college received a $1 million dollar gift from Gary Hirshberg, co-founder of Stonyfield Farm and a Hampshire College graduate.
The school plans to use the money to help expand its farm food operations.
