IRS offers free filing

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - There are free options for filing your taxes this season.  You can file your tax returns for free through the IRS website.  But there are income limits.

“[I] Definitely see myself doing it the free way because I'd rather figure it out than pay more money,” said Camila Rich of Northampton.

Filing your tax returns at no cost through the IRS' FreeFile service is an option for 70% of taxpayers; those who earn less than $57,000 per year.

“This year I probably would qualify. I'm a teacher I'm on sabbatical so my salary is not quite what is usually is. But so, absolutely I would think of using those if I could,” said Northfield resident Ted DesMaisons.

20 of the nation's leading software companies have partnered with the IRS to offer free filing.  But each vendor has a different threshold.  For some, the adjusted gross income limit is as low as 30,000.

And if you don't qualify for any of these free forms, there's always the Free Fillable Form. It's a service that doesn't do the hard work for you. The IRS says those who choose to file with Free Fillable Forms should know more about their taxes than the average taxpayer.

“I own a business, my wife runs a business.  We just have a sort of a complicated situation. I have someone doing my taxes for my business, so it just makes sense to have them do my personal taxes as well,” said Jim Olsen of Whately.
