Register of Deeds race, local questions on ballot

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - Hampshire County voters will have a lot to decide on Tuesday, besides electing the next President and U.S. Senator.

From a property tax override in Easthampton, to a county-wide Register of Deeds race, Hampshire County voters have a lot of important decisions to make.

In Northampton, voters have been filling out two separate ballots. Last August, the Northampton City Council voted to hold a special election after the city missed the deadline to include a municipal charter change question on the state ballot. One of planned changes in the municipal proposal is increasing the mayor's term from two to four years.

“I voted yes on that thing, and I did read about the mayor being mayor for four years instead of the usual two,” Jonathan Weinmann of Northampton said. “I think it's probably a good idea.”

The wardens for Precinct 3A and 3B told 22News that the special election hasn't affected voter turnout. As of 3:00 P.M., half of the 1,400 registered voters in each precinct had cast their ballots.

They expect a big rush Tuesday night before polls close at 8:00.
