Medical marijuana boosts Northampton business
Glass pipes in higher demand due to new laws

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - The state's Department of Public Health is expected to release the regulations that will govern medical marijuana centers by May 1st.
The law will allow for 35 medical marijuana treatment centers; at least one, but no more than five in each of the state's 14 counties.
Qualified patients who register with the state will be able to buy up to a 60-day supply of marijuana. Because of this, businesses like The Hempest have noticed an increased number of people looking for smoking products.
Manager Matt Ford says demand for this type of glassware has led to them expand their inventory.
"We've seen a lot more folks in their 50s or 60s shopping for themselves, or for a loved one or friend, because for years people have been treating various ailments and conditions with marijuana and they've just been doing it illegally," said Ford.
The state's new law also allows qualifying patients to grow their own limited supply of marijuana.
