NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - If you walk down Main Street in Northampton, you may notice something different.

A memorial sculpture was unveiled Friday on Main Street.

It was created to honor and recognize members of the business community who have made a significant impact in Northampton.

In particular, the memorial statue is named after Eva Trager, a Northampton entrepreneur credited with spearheading the city's business re-awakening in the late 70s.

The unveiling of the sculpture comes on the first anniversary of Trager's death. The sculpture was created by Northampton artist Gregory Stone who told 22News there's a special meaning behind the owl.

“The bird, I've done birds before, but the owl always means something special to me,” said Stone. “It's kind of, to some of the Indians, owls mean life, wisdom, and tenacity.”

Bud Stockwell, owner of Cornucopia Foods, said, “We are an arts town and yet this is the first piece of artwork that's commissioned for the street.”

It took six months for Stone to create the sculpture. Eight other business owners and community leaders were also recognized.
