NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - On New Year's Eve, downtown Northampton will be crowded with people celebrating First Night Northampton. The Northampton Police Department says they're ready to control the crowds, though. They said that they always step up patrols for New Year's weekend.

The State Police are also stepping up patrols. Lt. John Healey told 22News "There's a drunk driving 'Over the Limit, Under Arrest' campaign going on. It's a national campaign. This weekend, we'll have 20 extra patrols out throughout the area, looking for drunk drivers." He said if people drink, they should drink responsibly. He recommended having a designated driver. That way, everyone has a Happy New Year's.
