AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) - UMass head football coach Kevin Morris is leaving the Minutemen.

UMass Athletic Director John McCutcheon announced Monday that Morris has been let out of his contract with the team, which is making the move to the Mid-American Conference.

Morris was appointed head coach in 2009, and since that time recorded a 16-17 record. He finished the 2011 season 5-6.

McCutcheon said that with the team making the move into the more high-profile Football Bowl Subdivision, it was important to have new leadership. UMass will be moving its home games to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough for the next two seasons.

Morris had served as head coach at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and as UMass’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach prior to his appointment as UMass head coach.
