Mt. Holyoke College presents The Big Broadcast

Event is a revival of 40s era radio variety shows

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) - It was a step back in time Sunday night at Mount Holyoke College's seventh annual presentation of The Big Broadcast.

The yearly event is a revival of 1940s era live radio variety shows, and it's a faithful replica, featuring radio commercials and plays from that era.

Students also dusted off some old big band and swing favorites, including a rare Benny Goodman tune.

The show's written almost entirely by students, who told 22News they learned a lesson in history while doing so.

Wendy Mellin, a senior at Mount Holyoke, told 22News, “The war was going on, things were rationed, and this was why we had jello chocolate pudding, because we were rationing sugar and eggs. Things like that that are really interesting to think about.”

“They do the music from our generation, our era, back in the 40s. And we can relate to it very easily, you know,” said Jack Berry of South Hadley.

Sunday night's event was emceed by our very own Storm Team Meteorologist Brian Lapis, returning for the fifth year in a row as the host of "WJAZ."
