New alert system tracks file sharers

Allows six strikes before action is taken

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - Internet service providers will be keeping on eye on illegal sharing activity. They’re employing a new Copyright Alert System that aims at stopping Internet users from sharing music, television shows, or movies illegally.

The six-strike system was created by the recording and film industry. Its purpose is to stop online piracy; which has cost the industry millions of dollars. They plan to monitor activity by notifying users whose IP addresses are linked to sharing illegal files.  Online users will get six chances before service providers take action.

The new system is not without controversy, however, with some saying that it’s a form of spying.

“That's crazy, I don't know how they are able to spy on you. They are going to spam, watch like 'what are you doing on Facebook?” Taylor Miller of Westfield said.

Terminating your service is not an option for providers, but they can slow up your connection. Companies like AT&T, Verizon, Time Warner, and Comcast are among the providers who are part of the alert system.
