No threat to the public in Ware

WARE, Mass. (WWLP) - 22News has new information about Sunday's day-long bomb scare in Ware .

Ware Police Sergeant Shawn Crevier told 22News that there is no threat to the public, and that they will not be conducting any more searches on Monday.

22News is also learning more about the nature of the bomb scare. Crevier said the initial search was for a chemical bomb or anything related to that.

The scare began following an anonymous call Sunday morning. Regarding that call, Sgt. Crevier would only say that he believed that person was a man, and that the state police are helping them investigate.

Even though no bombs were found, Ware town manager Stuart Beckley stopped short of calling this a "hoax."

Route 32, West Street -- which was closed for hours from Anderson Road to Gould Road, is back open to motorists.

All town schools, including the Ware Middle and High Schools, are also open on Monday morning.

The air and ground search was called off at around 5:30 Sunday evening. During the search, police dogs and state police helicopters were used. Even the National Guard and the state Environmental Protection Agency were put on standby.

Residents first knew something was going on when at around 7:30 Sunday morning they received what is known as a reverse 911 call . Town officials provided few updates during the day, however. Until the threat was found to be unfounded, they had labeled the event only a "hazardous materials situation," and said that they were searching in the area for "suspicious activity" related to the situation.
