NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - Increased traffic is taking over the Glendale Road area, as Northampton prepares to close its landfill.
Department of Public Works Director Ned Huntley told 22News that the landfill will close by March of next year.
In light of the closing, dozens of trucks are preparing to cap the landfill. Huntley says clean fill from a construction project at Atwood Drive is being hauled into the north pit of the landfill; they estimate 50-60 truckloads of it per day.
Robert Morin has lived next to the landfill since 1989, and he says he is looking forward to the closing.
“My biggest thing to be happy about it closing is because of the traffic. It's going to be a good thing, it will actually help the value of the houses around here,” Morin said.
This increased traffic is expected to last until Monday. Huntley says that the DPW is still trying to figure out where Northampton will dump its trash once the landfill closes. Sites in Granby and South Hadley are being considered.
