Northwestern DA works to "take back" expired drugs

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - The Northwestern District Attorney's Office is continuing its efforts to take unwanted and expired drugs off the streets.

For the second time this year, the Northwestern District Attorney is teaming-up with the DEA to try and collect any unused or expired prescriptions.

According to the Coordinator for Elder Programs at the DA's office, every household has them. So taking part in an event like this not only gives people the chance to dispose the drugs properly, but it prevents them from falling into the wrong hands.

Last spring, a total of 3,144 pounds of drugs were collected at 22 drop-off locations in Hampshire and Franklin Counties.  

“My elderly parents, when they died, they had quite a few medications and we didn't know what to do with them,” said Susan Ford of Florence. “We participated once and we had some pain medication that we hadn't used so we took that.”

One of the collection sites will be in Northampton at the Smith Vocational High School. It will be open from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M on Saturday.
