NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - The more you post online, the less lonely you feel: that is what new research is suggesting.

Participants in a new study said that sharing something personal with a group of friends made them feel connected.

Researchers followed a small group of Arizona college students. Results showed students felt less lonely when they updated their Facebook statutes.

Still, not all Facebook users say that going on social media makes them feel included.

“I guess it makes me feel more lonely if I do use it, because most of my friends on there are far away like in different countries,” Hali Race of Amherst said. “It does make sense if you put a picture up and get a lot of responses, I can understand that it would make you feel good.”

The study found that though people were less likely to feel lonely by posting on social media, but it did not find a difference in overall happiness and depression levels among those who post frequently and those who don’t.
