Southampton police investigating cat shooting

SOUTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - A Southampton woman's cat was shot with an arrow, and now town police are trying to find out who's responsible.

On September 14, Southampton Police Chief David Silvernail says they received a call that a cat had been shot with an arrow.

Chief Silvernail wouldn't tell 22News who the call came from or if there are any suspects, but according to the Daily Hampshire Gazette , the cat belonged to Grant Avenue resident Deborah Sholly.

Sholly told the Gazette she came home to find the cat limping after being shot in the leg.

22News spoke to people who live in nearby Westfield, who say that the incident is bizarre.

"I thought it was very odd that they didn't know when the animal had been shot, but realize the expenses can be very high with them, which is one of the reasons we don't have them," said Kathy Armstrong in Westfield Wednesday morning. "It's sad for her because she's losing a pet that she's had."

Chief Silvernail told 22News the cat had to be put down. According to the Gazette article, Sholly said she didn't have the money to amputate the cat's leg.

Chief Silvernail says police are conducting an investigation and will release more information in the coming days.
