State Police: Be cautious on the roads

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) -

Black Friday may be the biggest shopping day of the year but Black Wednesday is the biggest drinking day of the year. Thanksgiving Eve beats out New Years Eve, the 4th of July, and St. Patrick ’s Day for the biggest drinking nights so it's not surprising that you should be cautious when hitting the road.

Katie and Megan are back in town to celebrate Thanksgiving with family and friends. This is the time of year that all of their friends return home and head to the bar.

“Pretty much everybody that's gone or living elsewhere comes back for thanksgiving right about now, we all get together,” said Katie Jackowski of Holyoke.

Megan Guidette said, “It's a great way to come back ,see your friends, catch up, talk about college, talk about next life plans.”

With so many people reuniting it’s a time for celebration and that’s one reason why it’s the biggest drinking night of the year.  That and the Thanksgiving meal the next day offers a great hangover cure and there are plenty of days after to recuperate before returning to work.

If you do plan on meeting up with friends for a drink, before you leave the bar and get in your car, Massachusetts State Police has a warning for you.

Lt. Michael Habel of the Massachusetts State Police said,“If they are drinking…call for a cab or get a designated driver.  We will over the course of the weekend have a sobriety checkpoint out somewhere in Hampden County.”

Driving under the influence Massachusetts could cost you your license and even land you in jail.

Katie and Megan are thankful for one thing this Thanksgiving, they already have a designated driver.  “We have a designated driver for sure; we don't like to be dangerous. We always have a designated driver each year, we rotate,” said Jackowski.

So don't ruin your holiday or anyone else’s by drinking and driving.
