UMass Amherst launches a sober shuttle

Program will run until the end of the semester

AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) - It's called the sober shuttle and it's the latest push to make sure students at UMass Amherst don't drive drunk.

The president of the university's student government association came up with the idea. Akshay Kapoor told 22News it's not only a way to save lives; it's also helping to mend their relationship with the community.

"Our town relations have been a lot better this year with such a large university and neighbors so close by we often get complaints that students are going up their streets and all year we've been trying to mend those relationships," said Kapoor.

The shuttle is free to students and runs Thursday, Friday and Saturday, picking up and dropping off students from the campus and several locations in town.

The program kicked off last night and will continue through the end of the semester.
