AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) - A western Massachusetts coaching legend announced Wednesday that she is battling a form of cancer.
UMass softball coach Elaine Sortino told her team Wednesday night that she is receiving cancer treatments. The news release did not say which type of cancer.
Sortino is in her 33rd year as the head coach at UMass. UMass Director of Athletics John McCutcheon said Sortino will continue to be as involved as possible with the team and remain head coach, but will not be running the day to day operations of the team.
The University is also asking that Sortino's privacy is respected during this fight.
