AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) - Three UMass students were arrested after police say they vandalized school property.

The students were arrested early Saturday morning and are facing charges of breaking and entering a building, trespassing and vandalizing property.

UMass Police say Elias Karter, Daniel Feldman and Alexander Chapman were arrested shortly after midnight for breaking into the Grinnell Barn. The old horse barn is an unused facility on campus, and numerous “No Trespassing” signs posted around the property. Police say they got the call after someone heard breaking glass.

Joe Popielarzcyk, a graduate student at UMass told 22News, “I was very surprised, it's Halloween weekend so I expect some mischief to happen, but nothing like that. Since I've been here I've never heard of that and I've been here for 5 years.”

Fellow grad student Tyler Colvin added, “I'm not sure I'd put myself at risk to break into a campus building. It did happen on a weekend night and it is Halloween weekend.”

A UMass spokesman says these students are also subject to university disciplinary action.
