EASTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - Schools were closed across the state Monday. But two days after Sandy's impact was felt in Western Massachusetts, one school in Easthampton is still closed.
Around this time of year is when The Williston Northampton School takes its midterm break.
Students were due back in school Wednesday after a long weekend. But the impact of Hurricane Sandy in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut has left several of the school's students stranded. That's why the Head of School Robert Hill decided to cancel classes. Hill says students in 60 families live in the most devastated areas, many are without power and the destruction has left some stranded.
Hill told 22News, “What we are hoping for, we've reached out to all of the families of our students who are away and we are trying to see if it's safe for them to get back to campus. We don't want them to come back if it's not safe for them to leave their homes.”
Hill says he's currently working with the Dean of Students to see if they can get the school's buses to pick students up and bring them back to Easthampton. Classes will resume Thursday.
