CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - We've all seen people texting behind the wheel, and many of us have done it ourselves. We may think that if we type really quickly, or if we're not driving very fast, it's not dangerous, but that line of thinking could cost you your life. Distracted driving kills more than 5,000 people here in the United States each year.

22News has been working to get the word out about the dangers of distracted driving with our "X the Txt" campaign. So this week 22News inFocus is working for you with what you need to know about the dangers of texting while driving. We'll also let you know about the penalties you could face if you are caught.

You'll hear from our local District Attorney, a father whose daughter was killed in a car accident, and a researcher who works with a program that simulates the dangers of distracted driving.

Jim Butcher: Safe Driving Advocate

Mark Mastroianni, Hampshire County District Attorney: 413-747-1000
