SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Icy roads created a nightmare on area roads Monday morning. Sgt. Alan Joubert with the Springfield State Police baracks told 22News that state troopers responded to a total of 18 accidents in a little over two hours.
There were several accidents on Route 391 because of the icy road conditions. Route 391 North in Chicopee was at a complete standstill for about an hour after a rollover accident near Exit 2. A 22News crew counted at least six other accidents on 391 Monday morning.
There were also reports of several accidents on Route 57 in Agawam. An SUV rolled over near the Main Street Exit and several cars also crashed into the median.
Springfield Police Lt. Normand Charest told 22News a section of Roosevelt Avenue in Springfield was closed for hours because of a head-on collision, but the road has since reopened.
State Police are asking you slow down and drive cautiously Monday morning. Sgt. Joubert also said as the day progresses, the ice will melt and the road conditions should improve.
