Chicopee Church closes its doors

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - A 97 year old parishioner pleads with Bishop Timothy McDonnell not to close her Chicopee Church.

Lucie Cormier told 22News, she's been attending St. George's Roman Catholic Church for 25 years.

It's one of 14 churches a Pastoral planning commission has recommended closing.

“I felt terrible about it. I couldn't get over it that they were going to close the church.
Because I walk to church and it's so handy for all of us to go, we felt terrible.”

Springfield diocese spokesman Mark Dupont told 22News, that so far parishioners in 7 of the 14 churches affected have appealed the recommendation to close their churches.
