SPRINGFIELD,Mass. (WWLP) - Springfield's MSPCA shelter closes at the end of the month,
sparking concern where hundreds of homeless animals will go.
22News uncovers fears that many animals will be abandoned to
roam the streets.
Carmela as she has been christened was brought in shivering from
the cold and snow on Monday to the MSPCA Animal
Care & Adoption Center.
She was found on Taylor Street. She ran into the parking lot
of a nearby gas station where a car nearly backed over her.
We scooped her up wet and shivering and brought her to the
MSPCA
With the upcoming closing of the MSPCA there will be more
Carmela's roaming the streets, Many pet owners who have adopted at
the MSPCA are upset that in the future more animals may be
abandoned on the street.
The Thomas J. O'Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center is
run by the City of Springfield It had been ordered to cut it's
budget by close to $100,000 for the remainder of this fiscal year.
22News spoke to Mayor Sarno's communications director Tom
Walsh who told us that that was decided before the MSPCA announced
it's closing.
He said they're looking at how to deal with the increase in
animals, O'Connor will see.
And people are asking what they can do to help the O'Connor
Center, they need volunteers and money.
They have a separate foundation that your donation can go
to--and it will go directly to animal care if you mark it that way.
It will not go into city funds.
