SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A man is in critical condition after someone opened fire at the car he was in early Saturday morning.

The shooting happened just blocks away from Main Street, the site of the city's 15th murder.

Springfield Police Captain Eugene Dexheimer told 22News officers found the victim inside a car riddled with bullets.

Captain Dexheimer said the shooting happened just before 3 a.m. on Chapin Terrace.

The 24-year-old man inside the car was shot four times, including once in the head. He was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield for treatment. He is listed in critical condition.

Captain Dexheimer says there does not appear to be any witnesses, but several people reported hearing the shots.

This incident happened just streets away from the site of the city's 15th murder. On Thursday night, in front of Christopher's Package Store on Main Street, 23-year old Omar Gallegro was shot and killed in what police are calling a drug-related shooting.

Anyone with information regarding either of these shootings is asked to call the Springfield Police Department at (413) 787-6355.
