SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The city of Springfield honored the contributions of Puerto Ricans at the steps of City Hall on Friday.

A flag raising ceremony kicked off the day. The celebration marked the beginning of Puerto Rican Heritage Month in Springfield.

22News spoke to Springfield resident Gilberto Rivera who was honored to see his heritage take center stage.

"For the city government to acknowledge us. I'm so proud."

"It's representing my culture. Makes me feel really happy I'm Puerto Rican," said Alexandra Vazquez, also of Springfield.

The Puerto Rican flag will fly high over Springfield City Hall until the end of the month.
