Amtrak train derails in Russell

109 passengers, 6 crew members aboard

RUSSELL, Mass. (WWLP) - An Amtrak train bound for Albany derailed Sunday afternoon near Valley View Avenue in Russell.

According to Massachusetts State Trooper Jeff Roberts some of the wheels on one of the passenger cars on the train derailed around 3:00 p.m. as the train was passing through Russell.

The train did remain in the upright position and was able to come to a complete stop, no one was injured. There were 109 passengers and 5 crew members aboard the train.

According to a statement from Amtrak the train known as the Lakeshore Limited was on its way from Boston to Albany when the derailment occurred near Rt. 20 in Russell.

Amtrak Spokesperson Katrina Romero told 22News that Amtrak arranged for buses to pick up the passengers and take them to Albany. The passengers were also provided with free food and drinks.

Police and Amtrak are investigating the incident.
