(WWLP) - A group of nine students from Wilbraham Monson Academy in
Wilbraham got the chance to spend two weeks in the Amazon River
Basin and learned about saving an ecosytem.
Wilbraham Monson Academy is the only school in the country
that offers this unique experience of visiting indigenous tribal
communities.
The students returned home Friday and told 22News they had
the time of their life. They also learned alot about some of the
issues these Amazon communities are facing.
"It's all about saving the rain forest and creating economic
benefits for producers and consumers. It's really the only answer
that's around now," said Senior Stephanie Robinson.
Junior Jeanette Viens told 22News, "They teach you so much,
they really know the most about the culture. They teach you so much
and are so kind and so generous; it was just amazing."
The student group looked into ways to stop deforestation
through economic incentives. They also help buy two cows for an
indigenous tribe that was struggling with starvation.
