SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP/AP) - A stifling heat wave has produced the hottest day of the summer
and forced officials in western Massachusetts to open numerous
cooling centers.
Officials in Springfield and West Springfield opened cooling
centers to deal with the heat wave. Senior centers in Chicopee and
Westfield were available as cooling centers as needed.
Here is a list of those cooling centers:
Springfield:
Mason Square Senior Center

8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Goodlife Center

8:30 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
West Springfield:

10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

In Chicopee, the city will keep the Fairview swimming pool
between 1:00 and 5:00 p.m. because of the heat wave. You can
contact the Chicopee Parks Department at 413-594-3481 for
information and exact times the pool will be open the rest of the
week.
The hot and humid conditions also forced the state Department
of Environmental Protection to issue an unhealthy air quality
warning, citing elevated fine particle readings.
